4 Benefits to Giving Employees Keys

Different types of keys

If you own a business, then chances are you have a front door, unless you are an online business. When you are installing a door you’ll need to put in commercial door locks as well which means there will probably be different types of keys that you can choose from and well as a locksmith. Once installing a door and picking of the keys is all complete, then will come the choice of who is allowed to have a key. There are some pros and cons to having other people hold keys to your establishment. You’ll have to weigh out your options while you are installing the door to see you can trust. Here are some of the benefits of having someone else have keys to your business.

You don’t have to open and close
If you are the only one that has access to a key, then you will have to be there every time the store is going to open and when it’s going to close. This means that no matter what you are doing, you need to stop and go to the shop, even if you don’t need to be there for any other reason. In order to make sure that there is continuity and consistency for your store, this means that you will be opening and closing at the same time every day. While that may fit your schedule certain days, there will probably be some days where that might not work out so well. Having someone else with a key means that you can schedule their shifts in such a way that you don’t ever have to be there at closing and opening times.

You can show your employees you trust them
It’s very important for employee moral that they are able to gain their employer’s trust. Having unsupervised access to the business is an excellent way to show your employees that you trust them. They will likely understand that the business is something that you have dreamed about for years and entrusting it’s well being to some else is a big step. To the right employee, this will mean a lot and they won’t take this lightly.

You can offer something to aspire to
Every employee needs something to work towards. They need some type of goal or pay raise or promotion to give them inspiration and motivation while they are at work. Since being a key holder is a trusted position, this could give them something to aspire to and work towards while they are at work. If you can afford it, you should also make the key holder position come with a pay raise. More responsibility should come with a higher pay rate so that you are able to expect for from them. There’s nothing more frustrating them being an employee with higher responsibility than everyone else, yet still making the same hourly rate.

You might be able to go on vacation
One of the best things about having people that you can trust with a key is that you will finally be able to go out of town probably for the first time since you opened the business. The main problem with leaving your own company is trusting it to someone else. If you promote someone and give them a key then watch them for awhile and see if you can trust them to run things while you are away. Start with a weekend and see how things go from there.

When installing a door, make sure that you think about all of these things including the safety factors. It’s important to make sure that your business is completely safe even if you are having keys duplicated for commercial use within the company. If you do decide to give out keys, then you might consider having cameras installed in order to make a little more accountability for everyone. If the employees think that there’s a chance that you might be watching them later, then they will be a little more careful about how they use the keys. Of course, hopefully the workers that you give the keys to after installing a door won’t be the types of people that would betray your trust anyway.
