3 Things You Don’t Want In Your Carpet

Everyone has experience with that carpet stain that just won’t go away. Sometimes, it feels like it would be easier to just throw the carpet away and get a new one! But you don’t have to make drastic carpet installation related decisions like that anymore, now that nearly 99% of all carpet stains can be removed within the first few days after they occur. Here are a few home remedies that you can use to remove certain stains from your carpeting.

Red wine – Red wine is pretty much covered in the carpeting basics. But if you’ve never had to experience the horror of a wine stain in your carpet, here’s how you get it out. After you press all the excess liquid out with a towel, cover the area with salt so that it soaks up the stain. Then, add equal parts boiled water and vinegar, and wash the carpet area normally.

Blood – There’s no limit to the situations that can get you there, but if you ever get blood in your carpets, you don’t want to be caught unprepared. To get the stain out, you’ll want to remove all excess liquid, blotting with a towel just like the wine. Then, apply one tablespoon of ammonia mixed with one cup of water. It’s recommended that you test the mixture on a piece of carpet beforehand, in case it bleaches it.

Gum – Remember getting gum stuck in your hair as a kid? Carpeting basics: don’t use peanut butter to get gum out of your carpet. Instead, freeze the gum with an ice cube and shatter it with a spoon. Then, use your vacuum cleaner to vacuum up the leftover pieces, and apply some carpet softener. Clean and dry the carpet with a white towel, to prevent an additional stain.
